A julefrokost for a company of twenty, without the hotel package

One long white table running the length of the hall, set with raspberry napkins on patterned plates and pink roses in vases, with tall curtained windows down one side

Twenty people is an awkward number in December. Too many for the good table at a restaurant, where you end up in two halves that never speak to each other. Too few for most of the places that answer the phone in October with a Christmas package and a minimum.

If you are the one who got handed the julefrokost this year, and your company is somewhere between fifteen and forty people, this is the maths nobody explains on the phone.

Why a team of twenty is too small for most December venues

Ring around in October and you will hear two answers. The first is that the evening you want is only sold as a package built for a much larger room. The second, and the more common one, is that you are welcome to join a shared sitting: your twenty colleagues at one long table, three other companies at theirs, one playlist for all of you and a fixed time to be out.

That works for some teams. It stops working the moment somebody wants to give a speech, or hand out an award, or put the year on a screen. You cannot ask three other companies to be quiet while your head of finance thanks the warehouse.

What a small company needs is not a smaller room. It is the whole room, for one evening, at a size the venue is willing to take.

What a 30 guest minimum really costs a team of twenty two

Our hall holds 30 to 120 guests, and booking it carries a 30-guest minimum. That sentence stops a lot of small teams before they ask the follow-up question, so here is how it works in practice.

The minimum applies to the hall fee only. If twenty two of you come, the hall is billed as if thirty had come, but the menu and the drinks are charged for the twenty two people who actually sit down and eat. The gap between your headcount and thirty is therefore a gap on one line of the quote, not on the whole evening.

Once you are at thirty or above, which many companies reach by inviting partners, the minimum stops being a consideration at all. The shape of the pricing, a hall fee, menus per person and drinks per guest, is set out on our prices page.

So say the real number when you enquire. A party of eighteen is welcome here, and we would rather tell you exactly what it costs than have you round it up on the form.

One room, and nobody else in it

There is one hall at Højdevej 59, and it is yours for the evening. No second company at the far end, no shared bar, no negotiating the volume with a table you have never met.

Practically, that means the evening can have a shape. Start with a drink standing up, sit down when you are ready, stop the music for ten minutes while somebody says something, then start it again. A speech that needs a quiet room is possible. So is a quiz, an award, or the slightly chaotic gift exchange that every Danish office runs differently.

It also means the room is dressed for your company rather than for whoever booked the slot before you. Decoration is part of the hall fee, and so are the sound system, the projector, the staff on the night and the cleaning afterwards.

The jobs a small team should not be doing itself

In a company of twenty, the julefrokost lands on one person who already has a job. The value of those inclusions is that they take work off that person.

If you want to see it before you commit, book a visit. Twenty minutes standing in the hall answers more questions than a week of emails.

Twenty two colleagues, twenty two dietary requirements

This is where a small company has an advantage it rarely uses. At two hundred guests, dietary requirements are a percentage. At twenty two, you know every one of them by name, so the menu can be built around them instead of around a safe average.

Our cooks work a few steps from where you will be sitting, so the menu is not a fixed list from elsewhere. There are set menus, Sølv, Guld, Platin and Diamant, and there are custom menus, all priced per person. Any menu can be made fully vegetarian, which is usually simpler than adding a separate vegetarian dish and hoping enough of it arrives.

Nepali cooking suits a room this size. Momo, the steamed dumplings, work as the round that gets people out of their chairs and talking before anyone sits down. Most of the heat lives in the achar, which arrives on its own dish, so the colleague who wants it hot and the one who does not can eat from the same buffet. If the December table should keep some of its usual furniture, say so and we will build around it. More on that is on our Christmas party page.

Getting everyone home from Amager afterwards

A julefrokost ends late, and for a small team that usually means everybody leaves at roughly the same time.

The nearest bus stop is on Kastrupvej, about 181 m from the door, a walk of roughly two minutes even in December weather. Line 8A stops there and keeps running at every hour of the night. Line 5C runs 24 hours along Amagerbrogade, a few hundred metres west, between Herlev Hospital and Copenhagen Airport. The metro runs 24 hours too, with trains roughly every eight minutes through the small hours on Friday and Saturday nights.

For anyone driving, or for whoever brings the gifts and the speaker somebody insisted on, parking on site is free.
