What does a wedding cost in Denmark?

Denmark gets married in August. It has been the busiest month since 1995, with June close behind, and that piece of calendar tells you more about wedding budgets here than any national figure could. The dates most couples want are the dates most couples are asking about at the same time.

An average would not help you regardless. A hundred guests on an August Saturday and forty on a Thursday in March are not one event with two different totals. What helps is writing the budget out as lines, then being honest about which lines you can move.

The ten lines a wedding budget really has

In roughly the order couples settle them:

• the venue
• the food
• the drinks
• the dress and the suit
• the rings
• the photographer
• flowers and decoration
• music, whether that means a band, a DJ, or a playlist and a decent speaker
• invitations, printing and postage
• travel, and a bed for the guests coming from furthest away

Ten lines, and the venue is one of them. It is usually among the larger ones, which is why it ends up standing in for the whole budget in conversation. Write the list out, though, and you can see how much of the money never goes near a hall at all.

Where you book changes how many of those lines you are still shopping for. Our hall fee is charged per person and already covers decoration, sound system, a projector, staff and cleaning, so two of the ten arrive largely handled rather than as two more suppliers to find and brief. Guest count, the lever that moves almost everything else

Six of the ten scale with heads in the room: food, drinks, the room charge, invitations, flowers if each table gets an arrangement, and the hours you keep the space. The rings, the dress and the photographer are indifferent to whether ninety people watch or forty.

The guest list is therefore not one decision out of ten. It is the multiplier standing in front of six of them, and it is the first number to fix.

Our hall seats 30 to 120 guests, and the arithmetic bends at both ends of that.

There is a floor under the booking at thirty. A wedding of twenty four is just as welcome and the room is dressed no differently for it, but the room charge assumes thirty, while plates of food and glasses of anything are counted one at a time. Twenty five guests and thirty therefore land within a hair of each other. Worth knowing if a branch of the family has been sitting on your maybe list since spring.

Children aged 5 to 12 pay half the menu price. Count them out on their own before you compare two lists of the same length. Forty adults, and forty guests of whom a dozen are nine years old, are not the same order.

How the drinks are sold, which decides the evening

Drinks are the line most likely to surprise you afterwards, because it is the only one still growing while the party happens.

It takes three shapes here. An unlimited soft drinks package, per guest, which locks the number before anyone sits down. Tap water only, which is the leanest there is. Or you carry your own drinks in and pay one fixed amount, set by how big the party is rather than by how many bottles get opened.

That third option is the one couples misjudge, and they misjudge it in both directions. A fixed amount does not grow with how much the room drinks, so a big wedding with a busy bar spreads it thin, while a small and largely sober one often does better on a package. The day and the month, which is the cheapest change you can make

August and June are what every Danish couple is asking for, which is why the good Saturdays in them are spoken for long before the rest of the calendar moves at all.

Shifting the date is the one saving that costs you nothing inside the room. A Friday evening, a Sunday lunch, or a Saturday on either side of high summer buys the same hall, the same kitchen and the same team, with far fewer people bidding for them.

It changes the guest list too, usually for the better. A Friday evening asks people to leave work early. A Sunday lunch asks nothing at all of anyone with small children and ends in daylight. Those are real considerations for a couple whose relatives are flying into Copenhagen, and they are worth weighing beside the money.

What a venue needs before it can answer you

Four things, and a real figure comes back the same day: your date, roughly how many are coming, how many of those sit in the 5 to 12 band, and which drinks model you want.
