Where do party guests park in København S?

Sixty guests do not arrive in sixty cars. They arrive in perhaps twenty, over the course of half an hour, and each of those cars has to stand somewhere close to the door until the last speech is over.

Almost nobody asks about this at the viewing. They ask about it on the Tuesday before the party, when the invitations have gone out and it is too late to say anything useful. So here is the answer in advance, for a hall on Amager in 2300 København S.

Is the street outside a paid parking zone?

It is not. Højdevej lies inside the time limited zone for Sundbyøster, which is a different arrangement from the paid zones further into the city. There is no payment at any hour, on any day, in any weather.

What the zone asks for instead is a parking disc, and only on weekdays between 08:00 and 22:00, where the maximum stay is three hours. Outside those hours, and right through weekends and public holidays, there is no restriction whatsoever.

So a guest who rings you the night before gets two short sentences. Nothing to pay. Set a disc if it is a weekday and the sun is up.

Why a Saturday or Sunday party never runs into the limit

Most celebrations in this room happen on a Saturday evening or across a Sunday middle of the day. Both sit entirely outside the weekday rule, which means no disc, no arithmetic, and nobody rising between the main course and the cake to go and shift a car.

Say so in the invitation, because people brace for the opposite. A cousin setting out from Nørrebro assumes a payment app, a hunt for a space, and a walk back in party shoes. None of that is the evening they are about to have.

It also quietly changes what guests are willing to bring. Somebody who knows the car can stand untouched for six hours brings the good camera, the folding chairs for the children's table, the urn of coffee and the box of decorations that would never have survived a journey by metro.

The weekday event that outlasts the disc

Weekdays are where the rule actually bites, and it is worth being honest about the arithmetic. A disc set at six in the evening covers you until nine. A company party or a julefrokost is very rarely finished by nine.

That is the moment free parking on site stops being a pleasant line on a website and becomes the reason the booking works at all. The spaces belong to the venue, they cost nothing, and no clock runs against them. A weekday dinner that overruns by an hour becomes a question for the kitchen rather than for anyone's windscreen.

A daytime meeting is the easy case, since it usually fits inside three hours with room to spare. It is the long evening in the middle of the week, the reception, the anniversary lunch that turns into an afternoon, where you want the cars off the street and onto the site.

Who the spaces on site should be saved for

They are worth allocating rather than leaving to whoever turns up first. In rough order of who benefits most:

• Whoever is carrying something. The cake in its box, the flowers, the gift table, the framed photographs, the bag of table decoration the family made at home. These travel a few metres rather than a few hundred.
• Guests who cannot walk far, and anyone arriving with a pram or a wheelchair.
• Grandparents driving in from outside the city, who should not be circling a residential street in the dark.
• The person who leaves last. At midnight they are carrying everything back out again, usually alone, usually in the rain.

Everyone else takes the street with an easy mind. One more thing sits behind all of this: the kitchen is in the same building as the hall, so no delivery is competing for those spaces at seven in the evening. What to write in the invitation

Three lines will do it, and they save a dozen messages later:

"There is free parking at the venue and free parking on the street around it. If you come on a weekday, put a disc in the windscreen. If you would rather not drive at all, the metro and the night buses run around the clock."
