Nepali catering for parties in Copenhagen

Maiya Nepali Kitchen cooks for celebrations held in our own hall at Højdevej 59 in Copenhagen S. The kitchen is in the same building as the hall, so nothing is driven across the city and held warm for two hours, and when something needs adjusting halfway through the service it takes a minute rather than a phone call.

A Nepali kitchen physically attached to a bookable hall for 30 to 120 guests, with the same team cooking and carrying out, is not a common arrangement.

Be clear about one thing at the start: we cater events that take place in our hall. We do not deliver to other addresses, and we do not bring in outside caterers either. If you want this food at your celebration, you book the hall and the food together. The same kitchen cooks for weddings, Indian and Nepali weddings, birthdays, receptions and company events.

What the room itself includes is on the party hall in Copenhagen page, and you can work out your price by guest count and menu.

Why Maiya

The kitchen is in the building, not in a van

The food is cooked a few metres from the table it is served on, by the team who then carry it out. Nothing sits in a transport box crossing Copenhagen, nothing is held warm for two hours before it reaches the buffet, and if a room of a hundred people eats faster than expected the kitchen puts more out without anybody making a phone call. Ask at the buffet how hot the red achar really is and the answer comes from the person who made it that morning.

Pasni, bratabandha and the days a family counts in

A pasni is the first time a baby is fed rice, and it fills a room with the family that has been waiting to meet them. A bratabandha is the coming of age ceremony for a boy in a Hindu Nepali family, and it draws a wider circle again. Both sit naturally between 30 and 120 people, which is exactly what this hall holds, and on both of them the host should be greeting guests rather than counting plates. Tell us which one it is and the menu is built around it.

Dashain, Tihar, Teej and Losar

Dashain is the long autumn festival when families gather and the elders bless the younger generation. Tihar, the festival of lights, follows a few weeks later, runs five days, and ends on the day sisters bless their brothers. Teej is kept by Nepali women in late summer, in red, with singing and dancing. Losar is the new year kept by Sherpa, Tamang, Gurung and other Himalayan families, on different dates for different communities. These are the nights a Copenhagen association books a hall for, and we hold our own evenings in this hall too. The dates move each year with the lunar calendar, so send us yours as early as you have it.

Well spiced and hot are not the same thing

Nepali food is reliably spiced. Whether it is hot is a setting, and at a party it is your setting rather than the kitchen's. Most of what gives the food its character is not chilli at all: jimbu, timur, ginger, garlic, mustard oil, cumin, turmeric. The chilli usually lives in the achar served alongside, which means one mild bowl and one hot bowl, and every guest answering the question privately. If half your room has never eaten this food before, our post on whether Nepali food is spicy gives the honest version, with the exact sentence to give the kitchen.

Set menus, a custom menu, or a menu built around a tradition

There are set menus from Silver to Diamond, and we will build a custom menu with you when the day calls for something particular. Any menu can be made fully vegetarian, as the whole table rather than a plate at the end, which answers a good deal of a mixed guest list in one move. If a specific dish belongs on the table, samay baji for a Newar family for instance, tell us and we will say honestly what the kitchen can make.

Allergies, children and the rest of the sum

Tell us about allergies and dietary needs when you book and the kitchen plans the menu around them, which works far better with notice than as a separate plate produced at the end. Children aged 5 to 12 pay half the menu price. For drinks there are three options and no fourth: no package at all, a soft drinks package per person, or your own drinks including alcohol for a charge per guest. The rates are in the table on this page.

Frequently asked questions

Do you deliver catering to other venues?

No. We cook for events held in our own hall at Højdevej 59, 2300 Copenhagen S. We do not deliver to other addresses, and we do not use external caterers for events here either.

What is Nepali food like, and is it hot?

It is built on rice, lentils, vegetables, breads and spiced dishes with or without meat: dal bhat tarkari, momo, sekuwa, gundruk, sel roti. It is reliably well spiced. Whether it is hot is a setting we control, because the chilli usually sits in the achar alongside rather than in every pot. The longer answer is here.

Can the whole menu be vegetarian, or built around a tradition?

Yes to both. Any of our menus can be made fully vegetarian, and alongside the set Silver to Diamond menus we will put together a custom menu with you, including one built around a particular tradition. Write to us with what the day needs.

Can you cook for a pasni or a bratabandha?

Yes. Both fit a hall for 30 to 120 guests, and the hall is yours alone for the day with no other event alongside it. Send us the date, the guest count and whether the menu should be fully vegetarian, and we will come back with a proposal.

Can we hold a Dashain, Tihar or Teej party in the hall?

Yes. Autumn Saturdays go first, and the festival dates follow the lunar calendar and move every year, so tell us the date you are working to as early as you can. We hold a Teej party of our own in this hall, so the evening is a familiar shape here.

Can a Nepali organisation in Copenhagen rent the hall for a community event?

Yes. The hall takes 30 to 120 guests, you have it to yourselves for the day, and decoration, sound system, projector, staff on the day and cleaning afterwards are in the hall fee, so a committee is not also hiring equipment. The food comes from our own kitchen, and any menu can be fully vegetarian.

How many guests can you cater for?

30 to 120 in the hall, with a minimum of 30. For a smaller group we can host you in the Maiya Nepali Kitchen restaurant in the same building instead.

Can we bring our own food or drinks?

Food, no. Everything served in the hall is cooked by our own kitchen, and that is the core of what we offer. Drinks, yes: bring your own, including alcohol, for a charge per guest, or take the soft drinks package per person, or take no drinks option at all.

How do you handle allergies, and what do children pay?

Tell us about allergies and dietary needs when you book and the kitchen plans the menu around them rather than adding one separate plate at the end. The earlier we know, the more we can move. Children aged 5 to 12 pay half the menu price.

How do we book the food and the hall?

Call us on +45 21 95 92 92 or write through the contact page with your date, guest count and occasion. We reply within 24 hours, Monday to Sunday, we work in Danish, English and Nepali, and both the enquiry and a visit to see the hall are free.
